Sometimes it can be hard to keep all of the variety of mattresses there are out there in your mind correctly. There is a lot of 'shop talk' involved, specialized terms, and similar-sounding names. A quick run-through of the most common types of mattresses.
Individual coil mattresses have each coil wrapped individually in some material such that they all work individually, allowing pressure in one area to dip the bed in that space and no other. This allows your mattress to conform to the contours of your body. The downside is that in cheaper ones, this coil system can end up tangled.
Memory foam mattresses have been rising in popularity since their introduction. they are essentially made from blocks or layers of viscous foam, generally made from some type of polyurethane. The material holds impressed shapes, making it excellent for reducing 'shockwaves' of motion across a bed. They offer great support, but some people complain of feeling like they are stuck in clay.
Air mattresses are usually used in the context of being bale to change the firmness and softness. They are generally made with two air pockets inside that can be adjusted. The disadvantage to these versatile mattresses is that they tend to have ridge of separation in the middle, or they do not stop motion transfer.
There are, of course, water-beds, but they are generally thought of more as novelty items and less as a serious category of mattress. There are a few other types, but they are relatively rare, too expensive, or generally not made in the US. Mattress sets these days tend to fall into one of the above three categories.
